Tide: down and back up 1 hour or so
Weather: super
Bait: lug, rag, mack
Rigs: everything, single hook zip slider for Bass with 2/0 hook
Results: 1 conger eel (12 lbs), lots ballen wrasse (best 4 lbs), lots corkwing wrasse (best < 1lb), 2 pollack (1 lb), a pod of 4 dolpins .... AND A Bass
Report: Started off in old head watching pod of 4 dolphins playing with all the small boats, breaching completely out of the water and riding bow waves on speed boats and ribs. Took nice 4 lb ballen on 1st drop of float fished rag, followed by procession of corkwings and the odd decent ballen. Was feathering looking for mackerel, nothing doing. Added some mack for scent on slow retrieve but no good. Laid rod down to tackle a nice ballen and once that was done, picked up big rod. Very heavy. Estimated 10-12 lb conger had taken two of the baited mack feathers and proceeded to make s**t of the trace. Popped both hooks off but only after the reel seat (diecast) had snapped! Hate congers. Could not believe it came into 3 feet of water in broad daylight. Continued with small pollack also tackling float rig but no mackerel and no sign of triggers, now routinely reported around Mayo but not here as yet...
Moved to a small beach to fish from dusk on coming tide. Was targeting a Bass, more in hope than expectation iwth a single lug on a single hook behind a 5 ox grip on a zip slider fished INSIDE the final breaker. Got a couple of small taps from flatties before finally picking up a nice plump 3 lber around 11 pm. Damn cold night, light offshore breeze, wasn't dressed for it so had to head home but delighted to find a Bass in Mayo. Bruce took one shortly after I had to go, about same size... fish up to 7 lbs now reported intermittently from some locations...
Nice day out, delighted with the Bass, forgotten what they look like!!!
Ive been beach fishing a few months and really enoying it. Have had some good days and some bad days.
On my last day out i was having no luck so decided to try the rocks that were close, only problem was standing there with a 12 foot rod isnt the most comfortable thing.
Would my best option be to buy a telescopic rod and reel set to keep in my bang and if so what should i look to spend ??
ive seen ones starting from €30
Quick session at the weekend in the surf. One rod in close picked up the usual flounder, turbot and sea trout, while one rod at distance showed very little interest for the first hour. On my fourth cast after having retrieved about 30 yds I hit what I assumed was a sandbank until it started moving very rapidly in the opposite direction and exploded out of the water. I've had tope take a bait on the retrieve before but it still takes a while to register whats going on. A nice fish which put up a great scrap in the shallow water. I had hopes of a few more but as dusk approached the dogs took over and that was that.
going to head down this weekend.just wanted to know which beaches are fishing well tried courtown the last time i was down and got a Bass on a popper but no smoothies! would be great if someone could give me some advice on weres best to fish

Report: Had dug some worm intending to fish Saturday night, but ended up doing taxi service for kids, so headed down Sunday night. It was very windy with the waves were smashing into the north pier. Cast out into the harbour entrance but bit detection was near impossible due to the wind. So just left the bait out for 5 minutes then wound back in. Had fish every cast, they seem to be feeding hard on the bottom in the coloured water. Had several double hook ups of coalies.
All in all a good night, and the wind was not too cold.

met the lads on the beach as planed and started to rig up . all hoping that the blank was not going to happen. first cast we all landed flounder so smiles all round.

. blank saved and that's the way it went for most of the day . i was looking for turbot and noel said this could be my lucky day and he was not wrong. so with the crack flying and the flounder and turbot blitzing the baits we were kept busy. i never saw so many flats been landed before . and most of them good sizes. as we were chatting i spotted my rod take a good nod and then another?.?. so reeled up and on a wave a fine flounder came a shore. 31cm. my PB.

then a fine flounder was landed by john . i think the same size. so with the picture taken . it was back to fishing. we all were quietly hoping for a mayo Bass and with the bright sun shine i was not thinking they were going to be around. as we were chatting again my rod tuck a good knock and with a short run i reeled up and the rod was shaking noel made his way to the water and said any idea what it is, i said not sure its fighting back. and then he said fine flounder with a smaller one on too. a brace of flounder ,

and this one was measured at 34 cm my new PB.

. noel then landed 3 flounder at once and john with 2 at once. so were the Bass out there?. well we were all watching the rods and noel went quite

and then up the beach he pulled his first Bass.

congrats. and pics taken and back he went to fight again. the flounder and turbot was still been caught and the rods were been watched even closer since a Bass was landed. and noel did it again another Bass . as we said its like waiting for a bus there is none for ages and then 2 come along.

. so with noel delighted and me and john determined to catch a Bass we waited and then the tide turned. and the night came in fast and the dogs came out to play and the Bass were snatching baits. with all of us missing bits and i said to the lads i missed a massive strike noel lifted into a massive run and he says back i didn't miss that one , and the rod top showed every move i headed out to the water to help i said Bass big Bass. and he landed a magic Bass of 4lb 12 oz. well done noel . so pics taken weight taken and back he went . with the bait running out we had to pack up bu we will be back and next time its mine and johns turn. so look out Bass.

. so the final count was: john: 11flounder,1 turbot 3 dog fish .and 12 corkwing rass from another mark earlier in the day: noel :19 flounder one turbot 4 dog fish and 3 Bass. well done again noel. and: my self :15 flounder 3 turbot and 4 dog fish. thanks for a great night out lads brill result. roll one the next session. lads add in any thing Ive forgotten+ pics if you like.

I'm going to be fishing the inner harbour for blonde ray using a dubby bag which i will drop with the anchor. I'm going to get a bit of a slick going on the mid to top water area too and try to pick a few gars up in this and whatever else while hopefully waiting for the ratchet to start singing out to me. What other kind of fish could i expect to catch fishing into the slick and what tactics would be best. I'm guessing float fishing but if anyone has a bit of experience and a better idea i'd be glad to hear from ye. Also while i have the dubby mixed up i'm going to fill a few swim feeders and fish them off the top of a 3 down for the flatties. Anyone tried this off the boat and is it worth my while.
Thanks for any comments and tips. I'm not at the boat fishing for long so i'm still coming to terms with the different types of fishing so any tips no matter how small will be considered and most likely employed as i'm not catching much in recent days and i'm running out of ideas.
Cheers,
Evan
Found a shed load of mussels washed up in a rocky inlet in Wexford today. Do you think they will be alright to eat or will I just use as bait? There was a lot of empty shells there as well but loads of closed ones, some where attached to small rocks. They must have came in after the rough spell and high tides. So do I eat them or fish them?
Thanks
Tommy B
I pier- fished next to a guy last week, one evening and caught a dozen decent pollock. We were both fishing on a float at the same depth with mackeral strips. Later, thinking about it, I wondered whether the fact that he was smoking might have been the reason. Anyone noticed this?

Every coalie in the Irish Sea between 6 and 9 inches long must have been sitting just off the back wall of the pier. Tried to vary the depth I was fishing at but they where everywhere, no sooner had the float hit the water than it was under.

Report: decided last night i would be going fishing, by about 6pm i was pacing up and down living room wondering if i had made the right deecision until i was forced out the door being told "if you dont go you'll be a pain in the arse"
on the drive on the way down it didnt seem that windy, coming over the cliff from carrick it looked calm enough and even going up the path it seemed ok. it was literaly as my foot left the path and landed on rock did the wind hit. Boomf right in the face, nearly took my hat off. then i looked at the water and it was like pea soup and quite choppy, not rough but choppy. twas a bit dismayed but threw out a conger line and set up a float. at this point i realised you get what you pay for. had stopped in a tackle shop in town earlier to get some frozen mackerel. rather than buying the Ammo packet of 2 mackerel for £2.75 they have an unbranded (almost hamde made looking) packet of 3 mackerel for £2.50. i figure its a bargain and away i go. once on the rocks though it was a different story. i cut into the mackerel when it was still frozen and the flesh was that really pasty white, grey colour that only mackerel can get after sitting around for a day or 2. there was no blood or sent coming off it at all. which given the colour of the water meant i knew i was gonna catch nothing on it. tried anyway. after it thawed out a bit it started to turn to paste, my knifes really sharp so could cut it easily enough but when trying to put it on the hook it disintegrated. after losing 2 hooklengths on the float i decided it was too choopy for float fishing so stuck on a 1 hook bomber and tried it down the wall and cast out a bit. both times i lost everything so at this point (about 8pm) i kinda gave up on catching anything due to the conditions and crap bait. so packed up all but the conger rod and let it sit. went over to chat to steve. he was telling me the day before he was down and the waves were crashing up right over the rock (while he was standing on it), indeed on the way down along the side of the path were big piles of seaweed that had been obviously washed up the day before. at this point he also hadnt caught anything. tackle wise he was doing as well i was and lost more than was worth it but he plugged away, i wasnt expecting him to catch anything since the light was failing, the feathers on his trace were quite small and the water was so cloudy i couldnt even see the bottom of my float when i had it in the water right at my feet. But, fair play to him, he persisted and was eventually rewarded with 2 colefish. if ever there was a lesson in determination and perserverence that was it. chatted with him, watching him fish till about half 8 then we both left. if the conger were to come on the feed it probably would have been around about the time i left but i had no confidence in the crap mackerel.
kudos to steve though for getting 2 fish in far from ideal conditions
to make it worse when i got home she had gone out and locked the door and i had no key.

Report: I made an attempt to go fishing in East Cork on Monday night and tried two beaches but both were unfishable due to immense amounts of weed. So last night I headed in the West Waterford direction. I got to a beach I prefer to fish on the ebb/early rising tide and found that my usual mark was very weedy so moved 400 m down the beach until it seemed fairly clear. I set up two rods one; with a 4/0 pennel pulley, the other with a 2/0 pennel pully, both baited with razor. There wasn't much happening for the first few hours, not even a nibble, apart from crabs devouring the bait - definitely crabs as there were still a few clinging to the remains of the bait a few times when I retrieved. I just had to keep rebaiting more frequently than normal.
Then close to low tide I spotted a small rattle on the rod - I stood next to rod and waited - then there was a strong knock, I grabbed the rod - the line had gone slack, a fish was running with the bait

I rapidly retrieved the slack and connected with the fish - it was putting up a good struggle so I reckoned it was a decent size Bass. As I got it in close I could see the fish splashing in the surf. Then weed accumulated on the leader knot got stuck in the tip eye of the rod - that's the time you are likely to loose the fish, so I moved back up the beach, holding the rod high and hauled the Bass out of the surf. It was not a bad size - 53 cm
So that gave me encouragement - if there is one on the feed then it's likely that more are about. However, the rod tips remained motionless, apart from when the rigs snagged the occasional clump of kelp. As the tide began to push rapidly forward I decided to pack up. I retrieved and dismantled one rod. The tide was pushing me back so I move my gear further back up the beach and then went back to get the second rod. I noticed the line was running diagonally across the beach but was still fairly taut - I presumed it was just a clump of weed that pulled up the gripper and was been dragged to the left by the current. As I started to retrieve it felt quite heavy, like a big clump of weed but at the same time there seemed to be a bit of a kick. I was unsure if there was a fish on or not. I eventually had the shockleader out of the surf and could see that a lot of weed had accumulated on the knot, that was part of the weight I was feeling, but I could definitely feel some strong tugs on the line now that the trace was in the shallow surf. So again I walked backwards up the beach and hauled the rest of the leader out of the surf and could then see a good fish flapping on the sand. This one was a well fed 58 cm Bass
So with that I packed up and headed home - happy with the night's fishing.
PS. Both fish were caught on the 4/0 pennel.

Hello all.
Im heading to the west coast, around tralee, in a fortnight for 3 days fishing(the 6 marks have been picked already), and it might sound like a silly question but regarding shore fishing....mainly clean beaches and estuaries....are the rigs/bead colours/blades/bait etc etc similiar to the ones I use on the east coast??? I presume they are but just dont want to turn up and have the absolute wrong gear with me and waste a lot of time down there when I could have a bait in the water.

One of the organisers said a couple of the marks will be mainly flounder so I hope someone could put my mind at ease on this
Cheers

Report: I havn't put up a shore report for quite some time, mainly as I had done no fishing in July and the first half of August due to a problem with my foot. I had a trip to Kerry planned for the end of August so by the 11th I had a short session at a local easily accessible rock mark mostly to test out my foot rather than the expectation of catching anything. I fished for about an hour and caught one good size mackerel.
12th August: The following evening I had another short session at a rock mark I never fished before, but one that didn't require a lot of walking. I had two pollock on a patchinko, both about 38-40 cms.
14th August: As my foot had held up well on these two short sessions I headed to a reliable rock mark that produced a lot of Bass for me last year. It was a much longer walk and the shore is much rougher. I got there about 5 pm just was the tide was beginning to push forward. Shortly afterwards I had a few follows on a patchinko but the fish would not take the lure. I tried a range of different lures but could not interest him again. Close to dusk the pollock came on the feed. I had two in quick succession, then had a 44 cm Bass,

all three on Xlayers. Unfortunately while getting the Bass on to the rocks I snapped the top of my rod

(I had slipped earlier and the rod hit off the rocks so I reckon that damaged it - I am not as sure footed as I used to be before I had this foot problem

). I continued fishing with the broken rod and got another 10 pollock before another piece broke off the top of the rod. Most of the fish were taken on Xlayers but after dark I got several on a baby patchinko. Most of the pollock were in the 1-2 lb range.
15th August: The following day I dusted off my spare spinning rod and headed back to the same mark. I waited a bit later this time and got there about 7 pm. Again nothing was happening until dusk, first I had a small coalfish and then the pollock came on the feed. I had 16, mostly on Xlayers, a few on the baby patchinko, and one or two on the full size patchinko. No Bass this time, but I think that if they had been there they wouldn't have had a chance to get a bite in as the pollock were attacking the lures with such ferocity. They were in the same size range of 1-2 lb, maybe one or two close to 2.5 lb. In amongsts the pollock frenzy I also had a mackerel.
28th August: Headed to Kerry on Saturday afternoon with a new camera (dropped the last one in a rock pool - ruined it along with the memory card with the photos from the previous sessions

) and a replacement tip for my spinning rod. I got to the accommodation, had a quick sandwich and headed to a mark that is supposed to fish well close to high tide. However, the tide was already dropping by the time I got there - I chucked out a variety of lures but had no interest apart from a small pollock on a patchinko.
29th August: I was up at dawn and fished a high tide mark Patk recommended, but not a hint of a fish - water was quite choppy. At lunch time I met Patk for a short session at a low tide mark. Again despite chucking out a variety of lures there was nothing to show for it. In the afternoon I headed to a deeper water mark. I was intending to fish for pollock and wrasse. I had a short strong rod I use for wrasse fishing but I brought the wrong reel - one that doesn't fit that rod. So I stuck to spinning. However, there was not much biting - I had a small pollock on a white plastic shad, but nothing more until dusk. But it was a nice sunny afternoon so I just relaxed. For dusk I moved to a different mark (one that I thought might have potential for Bass as well). I tried a range of lures; Xlayers, shads, jellyworms, tobys, as well as hard bodied lures like the patchinko, Feed Shallow, tide minnow but nothing was biting. As a last resort I put on a Tasmanian Devil - then first cast I had a small pollock. This was followed shortly by a better pollock of about 3 lb. I had another two smaller ones after that and a mackerel.
30th August: I spoke to John Quinlan and he said that daylight shore fishing had been very poor for the last couple of weeks but lure fishing at night was still producing a few Bass. He recommended a few marks and I headed to one of them at lunch time. However, there was quite a big surf rolling in despite a fairly light wind. I had a few casts but the water was very coloured and I packed it in after less than an hour. That evening as there was still a good surf I decided on some bait fishing. I headed to a beach that fishes best on a rising tide. I set up two rods baited with rag and razor on 4/0 pennel pulleys. It was quite until dusk, then I had a 40 cm Bass close to the top of the tide. About an hour later as the tide was starting to drop I had a strong bite, the line went slack. I retrieved that lack line and connected with a much stronger fish - this one was a well fed 51 cm Bass
I fish on for another hour or so - I had a few more slackliners but the fish were not hooked. Then I packed up and headed to the other end of the beach to fish down to low tide. Not long after arriving and setting up I noticed some small tugs on one of the rods. I held it but the tugs stopped, I put the rod back down on the rest. Then a few minutes later the tugs started again. I reckoned it was small fish pulling at the bait. I held the rod again, then suddenly a felt a stronger pull, let the fish run with the bait for a few seconds and struck. It put up a strong fight and I was expecting a good size Bass but when I hauled it out of the surf I found it was only a 45 cm fish.
Half an hour so so later I had another bite - this one did not feel so big and turned out to be an undersize fish of 37 cm. This was followed by another 40 cm Bass. So not a bad night's fishing.
The following morning my foot was quite swollen - I had exerted it too much over those two days, so that was the end of fishing for a while.
3rd September: My foot seemed OK again so I headed to an East Cork beach that is easily accessible to fish the last couple of hours of the rising tide. It's a beach I prefer to fish on the last of the ebb and early rising tide but I thought I would give it a lash anyway. There was a nice surf and it was weed free. Not much to report - first fish was a 34 cm flounder followed by a small codling, both caught on 4/0 pennel pulleys baited with razor.

they glided past less than a metre away from shore but totally ignored bait

. I left the bait for about an hour and the rod suddenly arched over but it spat the hook out when i had it less than metre from the shore

rest of the day the mullet gradually eased off and no more bites
was good day fishing anyway

Meet up with Jamie for a few casts yesterday & we were blessed with the good weather rain, rain & more f......g rain.
We headed to a rock mark first for a look but decided to try the nearby beach for a cast where some clown plunged his car into a four foot deep drain

beside the car park.
Got set up & Jamie was first of the mark with a Doggie, we only fished for a while as the rain was pouring down on us & a fairly strong breeze blowing so we packed up & made our way to another sheltered rock mark a few miles away & try For Wrasse & Pollock.
Arrived at the mark & got the gear ready & headed to the rocks. There was some heavy rain falling & the nearby laneway had turned into a small river with mini waterfalls coming down the cliff faces
Started off with some Wrasse fishing but it was very slow going I picked up a few but that was it so plan b was to head over to another mark that usually throws up some good fish.
Packed up the rods & walked over to next spot but with all the floods flowing into the sea seem to put the Wrasse of feeding I picked up another few Wrasse before we tried spinning but swells were forming with the filling tide & can only fish this mark for a couple of hours on the flood tide, Jamie picked up a Coalie & my reel packed in

so headed back to car to change it & try another rock mark which I got a Specimen Mackerel last week.
Made our way over & started spinning I first of the mark with a Pollock followed by a bigger one then Jamie got one but the swells were getting to doggy so called it a day, we got a few fish in bad conditions

& a good soaking !!!!!!!!!!
Hey i dont know too many marks and i thought it might be good idea to make a thread with a load of marks for me and begineers . If you can just post 1 or 2 basic marks ( not asking for any secret marks unless you want to ) and hopefully it will add up into a good few marks around the country

Bait: lug, mack, hardback shore crabs and clams
Rigs: 2 hook flappers hook size 1 and 4, sliding float and conger gear
Results: coalfish, ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse and jordan's first ever rockcook wrasse
Report: i'll have to keep this short as i've been flat out at the moment with work and weddings

. we decided to take the opportunity of the good weather to try one of our favourite south down rock marks. due to it's location and climb you have only got a small weather window in which it's safe enough to fish so we loaded the car the night before and a dawn raid was in order

. we got onto the mark to discover there was another angler from the forum already there doing a bit of SWFF before work and had a few takes already. we've spoken before at this mark and the usual fishy conversation began

. but just as we were getting set up he had to hit the road and we wished each other good luck
and said our goodbyes. good having a natter with you again man. we all decided to fish one rod each on the bottom and another on the float. the conger gear was chucked out but never got a touch the entire session. there were a good stream of smallish ballan wrasse and corkwing wrasse caught all day on our float rods and even one good ballan just under 3lb who fell to glof ball sized hardback shore crab under the float

. other than the odd massive thump the bottom rods hardly got a look in all day. there were a few nice coalies caught that should have been a hell of a lot heavier than what they actually were. they were as long as the measure but struggled to make 1lb 8oz

. poor wee guys looked starved with their caved in bellies and oddly there were no pollock about either

at this time last year we would normally get at least 4 pollock pushing 4lb in a single session.... mabey a lack of available food has them off else where in search of food or something. i know that stretch of coast was heavily longlines at the start of spring,, but i was sure there would have still been some nice pollock about. the only pollock of the session was had by mark and it was around 2 lb but thin looking also as it was easily 50cm, so starved looking too??. but sadly it fell off the hook as we tried to lift it up the rocks

. as we got to high tide i decided to chuck out a set of feathers for an hour, but not so much as a nibble on them

. the high light was jordan messing about with a mini rig down the rock face and getting his first ever rockcook wrasse (yet another one i've never caught

). he waqs made up and the lack of larger fish for him was put behind him as he now had another species over me that i did'nt hear the end of on the way home

Report-
We had decvided to hit donaghadee today, but plans didnt quite go as planned, so since we some bait dug we decided to hit millisle. it started slowish for about 10 mins but it soon picked up, the coalies started up, Rhys got the first 2, a smallish one and a larger one, for the first 30 odd mins we kept the fish in a bucket of water, but soon there were too many in the bucket, so it was time to release them, so a quick picture and then all fish were release. Soon the run of coalies eased off and an odd rockling started to show..... All in all a good session and hopefully the weather stays good for this for a while. Pics will be up soon!!
Hi, I've recently purchased a new inboard diesel engine for my boat, I'm just wondering can anyone advise on lifting equipment suitable to lift out the old engine and lift in the new one. We need to clear about 9 foot and be able to swing into the centre of the boat. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

had to pack up shortly after that,if I have identified the fish wrong let me know,I think they are Corkwing Wrasse but might be Rock Cook wrasse as well
I'm a bit bored of catching mack, pollock and small flatfish. Can anyone point me in the right direction for catching better quality fish or new species? Ling, turbot, ray and maybe even some of the smaller sharks would all be on my hit list.
This is our last weekend of the year and the boat will be launching out of Portnablagh - if the weather isn't too rough we would be fit for anywhere within a 15mile radius which would take in everywhere from Tory Island to Mulroy Bay. So far I have only fished the Sheephaven and around Horn Head.
Anyone able to offer any words of advice to make the most of the weekend??
Cheers !
