Here is a clip of Nick's new style which is quite interesting and seems to deliver very good distances for him in practice.

jesus I still thawing out despite being like the Michelin man with all the cloths. Had some scallops from the freezer to try along with fresh peeler. Set up the peeler on far out rod and set the scallop up on a close in rod, was trying out a rod I found in my dads shed...a Paul Kerry moonraker Bass rod, very light and whippy but still strong. Let the scallop drift around with a 2oz lead and this took the only fish of the night about 9pm. No other bites. Still great to be on a beach somewhere

Report: I dug some big juicy black lug in the afternoon at low tide, tough going but it kept me warm. Although I knew it was going to be a very cold night I was determined to get out as I had some stuff on Sunday and wouldn't be able to go fishing. As I was leaving the house there was already a layer of frost on the car windows. But I had plenty of layers of warm clothing.
I decided to try a beach I haven't fished much over the last 6 months but one that would be a bit more sheltered from the northerly winds. I got set up at about 10.20 pm on the falling tide. I used two rods both with 3/0 pennels baited with lug/razor, I used a gripper on one and a 3 oz non-gripper weight on the other. Despite the northerly wind there was a bit of a surf. It wasn't too cold - the wind seemed to die down for a while.
About 20 minutes later I got a strong bite on the rod with the 3 oz weight but it managed to shake itself off the hook about 10 m out

From the fight it had been putting up I presume it could only have been a Bass. I checked the hook and found that the bait had slid down around the bend on the hook preventing the fish been properly hooked.
A little later I got a knock on the other rod - and another missed bite - I thought it was going to be one of those nights
But shortly afterwards I got another bite on the same rod - I struck this one well and there was no escaping this time. It was a 44 cm Bass
Maybe 20 minutes later there was a small twitch on the other rod - I picked it up and waited until I felt a stronger pull - struck and had another fish on the line. This one was a 46 cm Bass
About half an hour later I got a third Bass - a smaller one at 40 cm.
At about 1.30 am I got another bite, this one was not putting up such a strong fight and turned out to be the smallest Bass of the night at 38 cm.
Two of the Bass were taken on the rod with the gripper weight, I had more bites on the other rod but only managed to land two of the fish. I was more than happy with the nights fishing - 4 Bass - that is the most I have ever caught in one session. I was also delighted to get them off that beach - I had fished it a lot earlier in the year but had more or less given up on it after a string of poor results.

Report:
Following on from the rather poor fishing the previous day in the Munster Open, (well for some of us anyhow...) The call came for another foray into Youghal to use up the leftover bait. The only way to keep the Rampent fella happy and interested is to fish a mini comp (ie massage the ego a little more, the needy git....

) so that is what we did. With the tide flooding hard, short casts of 30 or so yards to start off with had a flood of fish coming in. Doubles, trebles, whiting not even hooked but lasooed around the nose etc etc. Manic fishing. I managed to beat my feat of hauling in 5 flounder in one recently by retrieving another lost trace of mine with 3 whiting attached along with the 3 on the other regulation trace. (6 hook flappers, ye cant beat them....

) Lot of lads in the area fishing, our own Ferg amongst them, had nothing it seemed to report other than those whiting pests.
A couple of hours into it, and with JP hammering treble after treble merrily on his peg with myself and Seanie nto wanting to chicken out from what was becoming a massacre of sorts, wondering when it would be appropriate to concede defeat, a plan was hatched..... Purely for research purposes you understand...

In the back of the jeep was the remnants of the previous days KFC, with our poultry supply of worms almost exhausted, it seemed only natural to turn to an even more sustainable, easily collected (drive thru), environmentally friendly, carbon low (unless overcooked), tasty substitute. After all, Whiting has a delicate, almost chicken like flavour (maybe that has more to do with the dodgy takeaways I frequent frying there chicken in the fish fat, who knows...

) That dubious connection made, we all grabbed a bit. JP, being a breast man, opted for the crispy strip, a nice piece of breast meat with a crunchy coating. Sean, a little more refined went for a tasty strip of thigh with some of the colonels secret coating attached whereas, me, being the pig that I am went for a lovely bit of greasy skin....
Well, what do you know, those clucking whiting were on it again with, surprise surprise, the biggest whiting of the day at 37cms falling to JPs crispy strip. A nice one for me of 33 on the skin with Seanies thighs being totallly ignored (not it has to be said, for the first time over the weekend either.....

) Eggsactly the results we were hoping for..... No more backbreaking sessions lug digging, no more scandalous prices for live bait, no, all you need is 8 or 9 quid for a nice large 3 piece variety meal at the drive through in Little Island with the added bonus that you get to drink the coke and eat the chips yourself.... In these tricky financial times, thats a bargain Eddie Hobbs himself would surely endorse. A variety of baits in a box, probably better off eating the thighs yourself though, those whiting dont seem to be too fond of the dark meat.
A regroup at the somewhat inappropriately named, but really rather nice (and reasonable too it has to be said), Pak Fook chinese restaurant in Youghal had the cards counted and the Rampent fella declared the winner. Not won-tonning to burst the fellas bubble you see, (these Angling Athletes are of a sensitive disposition, very highly strung...), myself and Sean were only too happy to be the whipping boys on this occasion and amid mutterings of didn't really try, couldnt be bothered, let you win etc we set off on our merry way home.
A cracking nights entertainment and a highly enjoyable way of blowing the cobwebs off from the previous day with a ball of fish. Loads of decent table sized fish amongst them and it will be whiting suppers for a day or two (helen, are you listening.....I want them fish filleted by the time I get home!

)
I was wondering is there any place between Dungarvan and kinsale were I might be able to catch pouting and tubot
Can anyone hint me in the direction of somewhere I can pump or dig black lug in the South-West Cork area please? or anywhere in cork county for that matter...?

I hadn't fished Killoughter in over 15 years. Way back then the small road leading to the railway crossing was very bad, I thought that it must have been improved by now. I was wrong, it's like something from downtown Baghdad, don't go there unless you have a 4X4.
Started fishing at 8am and finished at 3pm. Loads of small whiting and Dab and only one decent dab taken all day.
As I was reeling in the first small Whiting there was an almighty pull on the rod and a seal surfaced just in front of me. The Whiting had no stomach when I brought it in. Not sure if this was the seal though as I couldn't see how such a big seal could just take the stomach and not the entire fish.

Report:Tried deepwater quay in Cobh first , not even a bite. headed to Monkstown then with the attack of whiting there neverending , if there was codling there they had no chance with the whiting . The bait was hardly in the water and the bites begun. I then tried dropping a fillett of bluey on a pennel at my feet for a conger , same again with the whiting straight away on the bait . Within 3~4 mins there was nothing left on the fillett.
Went to the Cunnigar on the way back , got there too early to start fishing so decided on Clonea Strand where we both blanked. Where are the doggies when you need them.

A waste of Great bait and a waste of a day!
What's the story with codling this year??? No show so far so to speak. Not even tiddlers.
South Wexford beaches have not thrown up any so far that I am aware of.
Out of the last 3 sessions we have only had school Bass, dogs and flounder.
Is ANYONE hooking???
