People:myself

Duration:11 hours

Tide:ebb to full flood, and ebb

Weather:w/v 330/10 cloudy

Bait:mack, peeler,rag,

Rigs:flowing trace, shrimp rig

ResultsPlaice to 1.5lbs, 11, grey gurnard, dabs, pollock, Specimen Flounder, Bass, Corkwing wrasse, ( yes in size donal!!),Guilthead bream 1.5lbs.Launce

Report:
Set off for a session by myself for a little bit of new mark trying, proved very fruitful with some great sport, highylight being a lovely 1.28kg flounder, was really happy with that as they are hens teeth.
Had a good few small bass also.
Started on the bank, ( dodging the numerous yachts) and had some great sport with the flats, with some nice plaice comming to the boat.
When the yacht race started to come across the bank, it was safer to move after a couple of BIG yachts missed me by feet!!!, with a cheerful Hello from the yachts!!! They really cut it close to a drifting boat!
moved into the harbour to try a couple of new spots, and picked up a guilthead and a few smaller fish.
Did'nt get to see donal in his new boat, but did meet up with him earlier, and he also provided me with some fresh peeler for the day, ( thanks again) I wish him luck and tight lines in his new craft.
Well, a great day out. and i manged to get a launce for the braggin rights, forgot i did'nt have one yet!!
regards
screeming

Be very careful Davy if you are fly fishing the Ilner river (Comber) as you require a Club Permit and Licence to fish this water. Reports of foreign nationals and the odd local poacher having been spotted there recently discarding Ormeau bread wrappers in the river estuary. Shocked

People:me

Duration:2hrs

Tide:high

Weather:warm but with heavy showers

Bait:bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:headed over for a short mullet session and had my fingers crossed that the rain would stay away.there didn`t seem to be many fish around when i first but a few more appeared as the tide filled.
i spotted a nice fish taking bread from the suface and gently flicked my bait a few feet infront of it.it took 2 more free offerings before it reached my bread and good as gold it gulped it down Very Happy after a good scrap i landed a nice mullet of 4.15lb Very Happy
the tide was well on the drop by now and i had to move down tide to find more feeding fish.i only spotted 1 more fish taking bread but it didn`t hang around long enough for me to get a bait out to it.i missed 1 more bite using sunken bread before the tide was to low and all the mullet had moved away.
i`ll hopefully get a run out tomorrow with the fly rod and see if i can get my first on the fly this year.

BTW, if you think a 28lbs salmon is big, I just heard there was a salmon taken in a bag net in Norway recently that weighed 37 kilos!

Mollie Fitzgerald with her magnificent 54lb Atlantic salmon

On 28th June 2008, co-owner of Frontiers, aged 45, Mollie Fitzgerald landed a 54 lbs salmon on the Alta river, Norway. The fish took a well-known pattern, the Mikkeli Blue in a pool called Ovre Sierra. The fly was surprisingly small (1-1/2" length) considering the fact that the river was essentially in flood at over 6.5 ft on the gauge. There was only a small window on the inside corner of the pool where fish might lie and the big one was in the 5 star hotel! Mollie also caught fish of 35lbs and 24lbs that night. 113lbs of salmon!

As Mollie described to Fish&Fly, 'The fish took on the dangle, as they do in high water, and left the pool for Nedre (Lower) Sierra, a run of some hundreds of yards down some big rapids in high water. We were left paddling hard and starting the engine to keep up – there is no way the fish would have been landed without the skills of my boatmen Tronde and Frode Simensen – he fought it for 45 minutes – less than the pound a minute rule!'

Ovre or Upper Sierra was described by a famous Alta fisherman, Hamilton Dalrymple, in his diaries of the 1920’s as a great low water pool but then he notes in the margin 'we now know that it is a good high water pool also' - He too caught a 54lbs fish there.

Surely this must be the largest Atlantic salmon caught on fly in recent times by a lady rod?

The fish was released safely. Well done Mollie on this magnificent catch & release.

Looks like it could be Galway next on the hitlist then so. Grew up on the banks of the Crana River in Donegal and spent half my life standing in the middle of it. Left Donegal 10 years ago and have had 2 salmon since, I cant actually remember when the last one was. One of the reasons I started dabbling in sea fishing was because of the massive decline in salmon fishing in the area. 2 trips to the Drowes this year, last one was last weekend, saw plenty of fish, turned 4 but no bloody hook ups though!! Evil or Very Mad

Looks like you'll have to organise another drinking, oops fishing weekend up here so! Wink
