Weather- calm and bright
Rigs- clip downs and 2 up 1 downs
Bait- Lug, Mack, Rag and Squid

Report- hit the pier in millisle at about 2.30 again not expending too much, but had a codling early on. as the light began to go i had a double shot with a codling and a rockling and then a seascorpion. i shortly headed back home as hunger began to kick in. can you use prawns or shrimp for bait and do you have to boil them first and what species can you catch can you fish off carne pier in wexford and if so what fish can you catch and what bait is best and also what time of year does it fish best. I'm looking for a fixed spool reel to matcha tubertini gorilla boat 350 4M .
checking out the Tubertini AP Power boat reel
or the
Shimano navi pg.
is there a better option for the money and what size is the best weight for the rod. 6000 or 8000? Hi,
I'll start with a bit of background, I currently reside in Kildare and use to do alot of match coarse fishing until the new arrival (now currently 2 years old) which put a Hiatus to my fishing for while, well not really stopped the fishing I just couldn't put the Prep in at night anymore. Well I have an itch now and I am eager to get fishing again and so I decided that I would like to try some shore sea fishing. I am not a complete novice and do know most of my knots and have being boat fishing a couple of times before, but just fishing with feathers for Mackeral/Pollock, I do have some questions though and would appreciate any help.....
1. I need to get some gear, I have a reel that will be suitable just need to get a rod and all the other bits and bobs (tri-pod etc) Can you give me some recomendations and places I can purchase this items. Trying to keep the price with in reason. She'd would go mad if she knew I was buying more fishing gear I already have a shed full
2. I was hoping someone would be able to show me the ropes regarding bait and presentation, I wouldn't mind just tagging along and seeing how its done.
3. I currently don't drive as I work in Dublin so I commute by train. We do have a car so I can get around to some areas but she requires the car most of the time so that brings up a small issue. I use to have a friend who I coarse fished with and he had a car so we could get where ever we needed to go. I was wondering if there was anyone local to me who I could share a car with. I have no problem paying petrol costs etc.
I am sure there is more I should be asking but I can't think just now.
Cheers
Brendan what are the best tactics for lesser spotted dogfish Hi,
Unfortunately I don't have my own car and I was wondering if there was anyone in the kildare area that wouldn't mind me bunging a lift from them whenever they are heading out for a dabble. I have no problem paying petrol costs etc.
Cheers

around cork harbor in general Came across this on the web, some college kids on spring break (they must have been rich) on spring break came upon a boat in trouble, here the story. I heard an interview w/one of the young men he seemed to be pretty decent said he was just glad to be able to help a fellow sailor in distress, we'll see. It's nice to see people acting well.
BIMINI, BAHAMAS (WCSC) - What's 50 feet long, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and was taking on water off the Florida coast?
If a group of College of Charleston students and their lawyer have any say, it might just be the biggest payday in a group of students' young lives.
While on a return voyage from the Bahamas during Spring Break, a group of eight CofC students witnessed a maritime mistake like nothing they had ever seen before.
"This massive 50-foot yacht was just cruising along. Then all of the sudden, they run it straight into a sandbar," said CofC senior John Capelle. "They were just rocking back and forth."
The group of students, all skilled sailors in their own right, sprang into action, keeping in mind the ages-old adage of the sea to always help a fellow sailor in trouble. They radioed the captain of the sinking vessel to ask how to help.
"He said, 'Mayday, mayday, mayday,'" said Mike Illig, a CofC student and ownder of Avid Angling Fishing Charters.
The crew on board the yacht had deployed a life raft and were jumping to safety, said Innig.
[See a slideshow taken by a CofC student standing on the shore as the rescue happened.]
That's where the Spring Breakers got lucky and the story took a turn for both the heroic and the litigious.
"He broke a cardinal rule. You're supposed to stay with the vessel until it is underwater and sinking," said Conor Smith, a junior at the College.
Smith is right, although it's more than a rule -- it's maritime law. If the distressed captain doesn't stay with his ship, passers by with enough youth, skill and desire to salvage a sinking boat can claim it if they can save it.
And that's exactly what the CofC students did.
Capelle, Smith and Innig took turns diving into the water to attach tow lines to the distressed vessel. They didn't keep track of how many times the line snapped or how many times they each dove back into the sea to reattach those lines. They just know they succeeded.
After four hours of towing the otherwise abandoned boat to safety -- including donning scuba gear to repair gashes in the hull created by rocks that were causing the yacht to take on water -- the crew is now entitled to more than a pat on the back.
According to Capelle, "if someone has already declared mayday, they've already abandoned ship to basically let the elements take the ship and do whatever they want with it, and another party comes and saves that boat, technically, it's their boat."
The owners that abandoned the boat are contesting that claim, however.
Now, lawyers are working on the case and they say the students are entitled to a reward for their efforts and the payday for them could be substantial. While attorneys sort out the details, the students say the possibility of reward isn't nearly as important as having the chance to help a stranded fellow sailor.
And with a story this big, the group is happy to have plenty of video of their deed to prove it's no fish tale.

Can't praise and say enough about these guys. Based in Limeric, the trip up is well worth it for the time and effort they put into everything they do.
They are only 15mins off the M50 motorway and only 10 from Marine Parts Direct for anything else thats needed.
Thanks again lads and well worth travelling the distance Just have a general question.......
Will a sea trout hit a surface popper in the same way as a Bass does?
My normal mark throws up a combination of both Bass and trout. I like fishing poppers for the visual buzz but would like to still catch both species (as a Toby does).
Always Hedge your bets both ways
Any ideas would be much appreciated, i know they hit wake fly's at night in rivers?? So??
Easy now.. People:me and Big Mick
Duration:4-30pm-9pm
Tide:dropping
Weather:foggy,murky,damp,wet,miserable,cold,you get the picture??
Bait:Beautifully formed lugworms, whole ragworms lightly salted, fresh fillet of mackeral and squid
Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers
Results:1 flounder for me and 1 rockling for Mick.
The short version is that we went to Greystones North Beach , lug ,rag, mack and squid ,,,,,,,,,,tide was out,,,,,,,,,,,rain, fog,cold,,,,,,,1 flounder 32cms for Dave an hour in ,then 1 x 5 beard rockling for Mick 3 hours in,thats it
longer version below;
Report:I'm writing this report as I sit in the back room of my house with the sun beaming down outside and the tide rising in Greystones. Last night was a different story and when myself and Mick arrived on Greystones North beach you could hardly see 20 yards in front of you with the fog and the tide was dropping fast We set up , got our baits into the water and sat down to watch for the inevitable torrent of bites which would surely come,,,,,but we were soon disappointed and started reeling in perfectly formed untouched baits .To me theres nothing worse than peeling off good looking baits that havent been touched,,,,,,,even though i know the scent is gone and all that .Then the fog started to clear away a bit and we could see Bray Head (??) in the distance,,,,,"things will pick up now Mick, once the fog has cleared", i told him and i nearly believed it myself .I was fishing with 2 rods, a 3 hook flapper out about 80 yds and a 2 hook flapper out at around 30 yds(i go by yards ). I tried lug on its own ,lug tipped with squid, lug tipped with mack, mack tipped with squid, squid tipped with mack, lug mack and squid, mack on its own and squid on its own,,,,,,,,I was even tempted to rob some of Micks rag when he went back to his jeep for his wetgear but I swear I didnt .I would be glad to hear if I left out any combination of lug mack and squid?? Then it happened,,,the shot of adrenaline we all strive for,,,,,,,,,,,I saw the rod tip tapping away, put the line under my finger and felt a beautiful little tug on the line. A little fishy was interested in my bait, it had all been worthwhile, freezing, soaked etc.I gently lifted into the fish, not wanting to end up with a pair of fish lips on the hook, and pulled him towards the shore,it can be tricky here with snags ,and Fishface has givin out(is that right?) to me many times for not reeling in fast enough and getting snagged, but i eventually landed a flounder 32 cms,,,,,,,,,what joy!!! .Big Mick tried to look pleased for me but his face ,like mine, is an open book, so I decided not to rub it in too much .I just asked him to hand me over my measure so that he would have to ask me how big was he,,,,,,,"32 cms Mick,i said, yes 32,,,,,not a bad size 32cms, decent enough at 32cms". The flounder had damage to his fins which had healed over. Well that was the highlight of the first few hours apart from Micks chair sinking down into the sand to the point where he couldnt get out of it and I had to use my super strength to get him up,the trolly jack was back in the jeep .A small dog arrived next with no owner in sight ,,,,a nice dog but I didnt want to give him that little signal that would make him think we were friends and that it was okay to rifle through my bait,,,,,,,,he kept looking at me pleadingly looking for that signal,,,,,,,,,,,,but all he got was the Eyesreilly stare .He wasnt giving up though and I realised it was going to be a battle of wills,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and the f&c*ing mutt won ,in a moment of weakness I dropped an eyebrow and that was all he needed,,,,,,he raced in and took a whole squid and a a large piece of mack just as his owner arrived . I had to admire the dogs determination,,,in fairness . It started raining a little heavier now and Mick started to mention going to that fishing Land of Plenty that is Bray Harbour to beat his blank,,,,,,,,,but God is good and when he went quiet, got up from his chair, held his rod, put his head sideways in the "I've got a fish on " position ,,,and reeled in ,,,he landed a 5 bearded rockling that felt just as good as a 10lb Bass,,,you can see his happiness in the photo below, which i'm sure would tug at even even Ahabs heartstrings ,,,,,, brings a tear to my eye everytime i look at it . Surely this is what fishing about ,,,,,,,,,man out in the elements,,,,,,,conditions against us,,,,beating the odds, then legging it home for a curry .We stayed another hour till 9pm and we were actually surprised at how heavy the rain was when we got back to the cars,,didnt seen as heavy on the beach . People:myself and the woman
Duration:sun-wed
Tide:all stages
Weather:all sorts
Bait:everything you can think of
Rigs:same
Results:codling
Report:
was supposed to go to kerry but a last minute decision over travel time we then opted on waterford, unfortunatly for the fishing end of things this was a terrible decision
only managed one small codling for about 14 hours of fishing .tried several marks between tramore and youghal including dunmore east and courtown on the way home.
seen some great looking Bass marks where we did some spinning and will have to go back when the time is right the rest of the fishing was with bait in the evening.
never even came across another fisherman , still had a great time but will have to get to kerry next time
sorry about the crappy report but thats fishing People: me, petekd, thighlines
Duration: 8.30 - 11.00
Tide: HW 7.15ish
Weather: breezy and rainy (brought the beach buddy!)
Bait: slightly lacking for me and Pete, but was some razor, clams, mack and rag
Rigs: usual
Results: Me - coalie and a schoolie Bass, Pete - 3 5b rockling, Shane -
Report: Circumstances dictated we'd be heading out on a miserable night, but we went anyway. On the way realised I'd left all my bait at home, so Pete generously split with me meaning we had 2 razor, 1 mackerel and 2 clams each
Shane was slightly more organised baitwise and had some big rag which also generously shared.
Fishing was slow, coalie came first, followed by a couple of rockling for Pete. Shane headed off about 10 minutes before I was into my next fish. Saw the rod give one knock, left it for a couple of minutes, but no further movement. Reeled it in to find a small Bass attached.
Pete finished off with another rockling.
Bait wise, I used one razor (which caught both fish) and was on my rod the whole evening, 2 rag and a couple of bits of mack . Pete something similar, but had fish on all bait types. He inherited the rag from Shane, so actually left the beach with more bait than he started and we'd had five fish - not bad considering what we'd started with.... People- just me
Duration- 2.00pm-5.30pm
Weather- light- moderate breeze and clear
Tide- Push, High and Drop i think
Bait- Lug and Whites
Rigs- 2 up 1 downs, flappers, wishbones and pulleys
Results- Codling to 24cm, a coalie at 26cm and a smallish pollack
Report- A Couple of weeks ago i hit Portaferry pier, not expecting very much considering the time of day, but on the second cast i noticed a small rattle, turned out to be a small codling at 22cm, shortly after i had another at 24cm. after another 1.5 hours had a nice coalie and then a pollack on the last cast. any 1 around north mayo tommorow for a cast.im not sure how weather is or tides but if its good im gonna dig sum lug and go local.if ur in the region get back to me hey folks just to let you know that the government with all their cutbacks are going to try and cut the 24hr search and rescue helicopter cover for the south east. there is an online petition to try and over turn their decision, if you agree please sign it, you never know someday you or someone you know will need it,please go to http://www.petitiononline.com/sar01/petition.html
thanks
