Buy an old Abu7000 from the auction site - make sure it is made in sweden. It will cover ANY type of fishing including boat work upto 100ft. Pick them up for about £30-40. I have 6 now cos they are the best alrounder for the money. I have two new Shimano Toriums, now they are the biz...but about £110-130 each.
Good luck

Absolurely right...they are the business. Only used them from the shore because been blown off lately. The 14s have brakes and cast very well and so smooth and fast on the retrieve. Thanks guys.
Steve
P.s. cost me a pair of diamond earings though for the EPO!!!!

The last I heard they were being hosted by England at a mark near Dover called Samphire Hoe.
I fish Samphire regularly & it's used for a lot of competitions, but if the wind is in the wrong direction it can be a nightmare place!

Subject: Penn 525 Mag .vs. Penn 525 Supermag Xtra ???
Posted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 2:12 pm (GMT 1)
The only difference seems to be the mag control: a slide control on the Mag .vs. a knob on the Supermag (which I presume gives more mag control).
Does anyone have experience with both? Just curious to know if there's any significant difference in the mag controls? I already have a Supermag and I'm thinking of getting a 2nd one but I'm not sure what the "non-Super" models are like
Has anyone ever noticed the Supermag Xtra for sale in the US?

Subject: Ballycastle Beach Co Antrim. 05/07/08
Posted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 11:52 am (GMT 1)
People:Me
Duration:5.30pm-8.30pm
Tide:H/T 8.15pm
Weather:Wet and Windy
Bait:Rag/Mack
Rigs:2 hook flappers
Results:2 Turbot, 3 flounder
Report: I decided to brave the weather and head to Ballycastle. It was chucking it down all the way and I almost turned back.
The beach was empty when I got there and it wasnt long before the first rod went out. Before I could finish baiting up the second rod, the old rod tip was going like mad and it produced a double shot Turbot and Flounder.
I cast out and was into a Turbot again, things were looking good!! I had only been on the beach 20 mins and had 2 Turbot and a Flounder.
Then things went dead and the baits were coming in untouched. I thought I would give it a go until hightide and on the last cast of the night I managed a double shot Flounder.
The weather was awful with high wind and rain but I'm glad I stuck with it. Beats watching TV.

Subject: Wexford Fishathon Take 2
Posted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 4:03 am (GMT 1)
People: Me (mostly) mga & stevecrow74
Duration: Mon - Fri
Tide: various
Weather: Brutal... bar Wed & Thur
Bait: Peeler, Rag, Lug, Sandeel, Squid, Mackeral, silver eel, Razor, Sprats
Rigs: Various
Results: Tope, Starry Smoothound, Huss, Dogs, Flounder, Dab, Starfish (explain later)
Report:
Mon-20:00-01:00: Arrived down to Wexford dying from the day before at the Derby met Stevecrow74 & mga picked up the bait and had a quick pint in the local in keeping with tradition. Arrived at my favourite mark just after high tide it usually fishes great for 2-3hrs after high tide. The wind was blowing strong S/SE and there was a good bit of weed in the water which didn't help we stuck it out for as long as posible but in fairness it was tough going. I nearly lost my shelter only managed to just about grab it before it ended up in Wicklow!! Stevecrow74 was first in with a flounder then i had a double shot of dab and flounder and after a long time with no action Steve pulled in the best fish of the night another flounder but of much better quality. Poor mga had no luck (it was blowing a hooley in fairness) which was a shame as we had been talking up the mark all week!!
Tues-17:30-01:00: After stocking up on more crab and checking the weather reports we (mga, stevecrow74 & myself) decided to hit the point in Rosslare when we arrived the wind was pretty much going over head and it was fishable in front of us (white horses out further) little bit of weed which dropped off with the slackening tide we all set up one rod with crab at distance no action (this was too be a recurring event) all 3 rods came back stripped not even bait elastic!! After a while of NO ACTION
we set up second rods with 3 hook flappers scratching in closer anything to safe a blank!! We then set about spinning various lures trying to tempt some bass and there were mullet jumping in the chanel inside the rocks! After various baits of all manner and size which were still coming back stripped bare we decided to pack up around 01:00 and headed for Tesco's to pick up dinner after searching in vain for a chippie
it was blanks all round and i would put money that every crab in the locale was sheltering out of the current right in front of us as the baits were cleaned in less than 10mins
Wed-20:30-02:30: The lads had obligations to fulfil in Galway so as they headed off i made myself some brekkie/lunch/dinner stocked up on some energy drinks and choclate bars. Quick pint in the local then back to fish the mark we had fished on Monday. Wind had died down, little weed was holding bottom with plain leads had one rod in close with rag trying to pick up some of the bass we got the last time it looked ideal for bass good surf hittting the back of the sandbanks! Had the 2nd rod at distance with crab first cast produced a dab then nothing for hours
i was kept amused by a little fox who we had spotted on Mon and myself & steve had spotted previously. I saw 2 eyes down the beach watching me and a little while later i turned to see 2 little eyes under ny tripod!! He obviously couldn't see the infrared light (stops the bugs dive bombing you) i use to watch the rod tips just manged to get my phone out of my pocket for a pick with out him noticing
then got a run of dogs in close and at distance no smuts
had to pack up at 02:30 as there was lightening out at sea saw two flashes 2nd one looked closer so in record time (the lads would've been proud) rods were broken down just got back to car which was facing out to sea when a big flash of lightening lit up the sky and it seemed an awful lot closer at this stage i was wanting a shot of the strong stuff!!
ended up with 1 dab 6 dogs
Thurs-20:30-04:00: Picked up some rag and crab off the boys in Courtown both were top drawer
had a pint in the local then hit Clones weather was great blue skies no wind no weed one rod in close with rag one at distance with crab got chatting to a lad/Paul who has a mobile just off the beach he was keen on fishing and was due to go out Sat from Arklow i'd say that was cancelled!! Noticed a tap on the rod looked like a typical flat rattle then a few more pronoucned taps bass i tought not to be a double shot of dab and dog wasn't too dissapointed.... there's fish out there happy days!! Paul headed off and i continued fishing it was pretty much a fish a cast then Paul arrived back with a spinning rod and a pair of waders ..... and set up a tripod right beside me
"can i borrow a few rag" he asked not wanting to be a bad sport i gave him a few rag and watched as he set up the spinning rod with a tennis ball i kid you not that was drilled to house a tube through which the line ran ball bearing either side of the tennis ball and a 2 hook trace below. He picked it up off another guy who fishes Clones he cast out into the suds and when the tide is dropping as it was it just sits behind the surf the trace is off the bottom flowing in the suds he said its great for bass there were no bass to be had but he picked up a few doggies even though he was litterally 15ft out
Then after an exchange of a few rag for a few miller
i got a serious pull on the ZTI baited with crab at distance (22:30) the ratchet was screaming and the rod felt like there was a drag car attached after some pumping and winding with line still screaming of the reel and the rod bucking in my hands when disaster rod sprang back fish gone
a few exclamations later i reeled in to find my leader knot had gave way under the strain i would say it was definately a double figure smoothie / tope. Was absolutley gutted Paul was in shock at the rate the line was coming off the reel!! Got the rod back out and was still cursing my luck when i pulled in a huss wasn't much bigger than a doggie but a huss all the same the doggies were still coming at a decent rate then i got whacked again on the crab and struck into a decent fish new straight away it was a smut by the runs and head shaking luckily Paul was still around to take the photo happy days
Paul headed off and i stayed on catching dog after dog at this stage i had run out of rag and instead tried a different combo mid range continued to get dogs when i got hit with what looked like another dog then it kicked a bit more and felt like a decent fish was expecting another smut when i had a double shot of dog and tope (2nd from the shore in the space of a month both pups) over the moon at this stage considering the fishing had been so tough mon & tues stayed on till 04:00 with dogs still comming regularly will definatley be back with big fish baits in a week or two to try and get a double figure tope!!
Fri-20:00-22:00
Nigel one of my buddies out of Wicklow who spent the week with myself and stevecrow74 at the start of June (must get him registered on the site) came down and 2 pals from Dublin stocked up with crab and rag hit Kilgorman in search on some more smuts!! Absolute nightmare wind was coming NE then swung around and was coming straight in E with buckets of rain behind it!! we all set up and had rods fishing when the 2 lads from Dublin went to set up a beach buddy (igloo type with ground sheet) they had picked up during the week should've got a photo it was comical they finally got it set up but at this stage it was drenched inside and out!! Then i caught a starfish which was genuiely hooked on crab
and i'm claiming it as it was one of only two fish?? caught the other a dog who one of the Dubling lads got. The intensity of the wind and waves hitting the beach were getting a bit hairy when we got swamped by a freak wave time to pack up it was unfishable when we left!! the lads from Dublin had their beach buddy blown away down the beach and over the sand dunes
after a quick change of clothes in the car park it was time to hit the local for some creamy pints and whiskey
the girls arrived down just before we hit the pub so that spelt the end of the fishing for now

Forget the broom stick get yourself a nice 7'-6" or a 7' 20/30 class rod and enjoy the fishing.
Do most of my fishing with a 15/20 class rod had doubles and tribles of conger on it, not a problem landing them.
Too many anglers over size their boat rods and end up taking the sport out of playing a fish.
